My name is Alice Carroll: I’m a 19-year-old violinist, a former BYSO and BYSE member, and I’ve recently completed my first week of Freshers at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff.

Moving from Berkshire to Cardiff has been a big change: new city, new standards, new intensity. Cardiff is alive with culture: from the Music City strategy to independent venues, festivals, the BBC NOW and Welsh National Opera, there’s always something happening.

At the RWCMD, the facilities are amazing. The practice rooms, the concert halls, the orchestral and ensemble opportunities, the one-to-one tuition with faculty who are active professionals. I am still getting used to this transition from A-levels and BYSO, but at the RWCMD, I feel comfortable enough to step outside of my comfort zone and to develop as a musician.

Throughout my time in BYSO and BYSE, I found that I really enjoyed playing in orchestras and chamber ensembles. Since starting at the RWCMD, I have already been given a place in their Rep orchestra, been put into chamber ensembles, and met two members of the Carducci Quartet. I always feel like I’m learning new skills at the same time as meeting so many kind and talented people.

My advice for anyone who is considering applying to a conservatoire is to start audition prep early. The choice of your repertoire matters – it is important to show musicality, technicality, and maturity when you play your instrument. In addition to this, what has really benefited me is my past active involvement in musical opportunities. Never say no to an opportunity – everything will benefit and improve your playing.

It’s been really exciting to start a new chapter in my musical journey, and I can’t wait to see what I’ll end up doing in 4 years’ time at the end of my undergraduate degree!

Never say no to an opportunity - everything will benefit and improve your playing.
