Chris is the Head of Music at Newlands Girls’ School, an outstanding secondary school in Maidenhead, where he has played an instrumental role in transforming the department over the past four years. Initially joining the school nine years ago in his first teaching role, Chris quickly became Head of PSHE, before being promoted to Head of Music. Since then, he has overseen its growth into a thriving, dynamic hub. Under his leadership, the department has achieved strong exam results, and the school’s extracurricular music programme has flourished, with concerts and musical productions that boast impressive participation numbers. Music has become the heart of the school community, thanks to Chris’s dedication and vision.
In addition to his teaching, Chris is a practising musician. Trained as a jazz saxophonist, he continues to perform as a session musician, often playing at weddings and festivals. He brings his extensive experience as a performer into the classroom, inspiring students through both his artistry and teaching.
With extensive experience in coaching and mentoring, Chris has established himself as a trusted mentor for both students and colleagues, guiding them to develop their skills and build confidence at all levels. He is particularly skilled at supporting teachers in developing their teaching strengths, helping them to deliver engaging lessons confidently. Passionate about the role of vocal expression in music education, Chris encourages the incorporation of singing into the classroom, believing it to be a vital tool for fostering creativity, self-assurance, and collaboration among students. He is committed to creating a welcoming and inspiring environment where every student’s voice is valued.
