My musical journey began when my Mum bought Tunes for Ten Fingers: A First Piano Book to keep us both busy one wet winter afternoon. I started learning the recorder and saw the horn being played in an orchestral concert. I was attracted to its complex, shiny metal work, and the need to spin it around vigorously to empty the ‘spit’ (officially condensation)!

I was lucky that Berkshire Maestros – now Berkshire Music Trust – came into my school as part of an In2Music project in Year 3 to teach my whole class trumpet. Soon, I was having lessons on all my instruments with Berkshire Music Trust. Some of my first orchestral playing experiences were with BYSO, but I also gained a place in the National Children’s Orchestra, where I took part in music residencies for several years. With the full support of my amazing Berkshire Music Trust teachers, I auditioned for the Royal College of Music Junior Department and my musical journey continued there in London.

I’m now studying Maths at Durham University, and my musical journey is continuing. I was offered a Music Scholarship at Durham, and I play in several orchestras, groups, and a pit band. I also enjoy playing with a London group that rehearses Musical Theatre in Sitz.

In the future, I’m hoping to continue developing my skills in playing all my instruments.  I liked helping out with the beginner woodwind ensembles at Newbury Music Centre too (now West Berkshire Music Centre). Perhaps I might teach someone to play an instrument one day!
